Grave of Charles Arthur ('Art') Bassett II (1931-1966), NASA astronaut and United States Air Force (USAF) pilot. Bassett entered the USAF when the Korean War broke out in 1950. He trained as a fighter pilot, but was not posted to Korea until 1954, after the war had ended. He then studied electrical engineering (graduating 1960) and trained as a test pilot (graduating 1962). He was selected as part of NASA's Astronaut Group 3 in October 1963. Bassett had been assigned to fly on the Gemini 9 spacecraft, but was killed aged 34 in an aircraft crash while in training.
